Victor Korchnoi was a candidate for the World Championship on ten occasions:
1962, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1988 and 1991
In late December 2012, it was reported that he was recovering
from a stroke and was unlikely to play competitive chess again.

He had 2602 in rating as late as in July 2008; 77 years and 3 months old.
From March to May 2012 - 81 years old - he increased(!) the rating from 2549 to 2558
